Conclusion |
From my research and analysis of the trailers I have learnt that providing an atmosphere, whether it's a tense atmosphere, sad or happy - it is important that its is clear from the onset in order to completely immerse the audience to the story from the beginning. The most effective ways of creating this atmosphere, as demonstrated in the trailers above is the use of either a complimentary or juxtaposing soundtrack to the visual aesthetics.
None of the shots in these trailers are in chronological order, the fragmented theory of presenting the narrative is applied to all of these trailers as they are showing the "best bits" rather than providing too much information about the plot - however, a basic idea of the plot is provided once the audience are able to piece everything together. Narrative flow - a variety of editing paces and techniques are used in each of the trailers in order to create interest for the audience... The change in pace is also exaggerated, as are the character's emotions which are the typical conventions used in dramas in order to make it effective. A sense of realism comes across in every trailer - realism is a very important aspect in dramas as they are made for an audience to be able to relate to - they also make the audience feel better abut themselves as they realise their life isn't as bad/ dramatic. In order to create this realism, the setting is usually in a recognisable place, or somewhere that the audience can make connection with, in addition, to reinforce this are the use of modern props and everyday clothing (if the film is a modern drama) as it's what the audience can best relate to. Being able to make these connections from the audience's perspective, allows them to engage more with the film. The exception of all f this however,(in the trailers that i have analysed) is Gravity. It is set in space, which is a setting that not many of us as an audience are able to relate to - however, what does add to the realism are the props and costumes used to compliment the setting and the scenario as well as the character's emotional journey, ( she just happens to take this journey through extreme measures, whilst the rest of us experience these on a small scale in our ordinary lives). I will take on board everything of importance that make an effective trailer and the unique conventions used to distinguish the genre and its sub-genre. I will use similar elements to these trailers; present a fragmented storyline within the trailer, create an atmosphere, develop the trailer through post production by including a voice-over and written information that will effectively contribute to the overall trailer. |
Reflection |
After having analysed several film posters of the same genre of my own trailers (however being of different sub-genres) I have learned of the key conventions of the drama genre and how to compose them in order to attract and persuade the right audience to go and watch the film.
The use of lighting is a key convention, especially for a drama and psychological films as the darkness allows depth to the poster creating a necessary that attracts the audience. Contrast is also a common feature, this can be a contrast of colours like in the Mindscape and Whiplash posters or a contrast in lighting as in the Black Swan poster. The choice of colour is also very important as all the colours found on each of the posters are a symbol or their connotations are reflected within the films that they're advertising. For a poster of this genre, the main focus of the poster is the main image/ images, an appropriate atmosphere has to be created, some symbolic aspects should be included that can only be decoded after having watched the film in order to interest the audience into finding out the representation of said symbol. Having the title at the bottom on the page is very common within this genre as the main aim of the poster is for the audience to be drawn to the image and the atmosphere that’s created. In consequence, the title is the last the last convention that the audience take into consideration. This is a good technique as after having been drawn to the image and sensed the atmosphere of the film, the last thing the audience will keep in mind is the name of the film and they will most likely remember it. In addition, the titles are very short and simple, in most cases, only one word, having short and snappy titles make them much more memorable and impactful. From further research of even more films of the same genre, they all have short titles, I will make use of this convention in order for the audience to recognise the film’s genre as well as making it easily memorable. The purpose of film posters of the drama genre, in terms of the theory of uses and gratification are to identify and to entertain - this is achieved through all of the pervious conventions working in conjunction of each other. In my own product, I will take into consideration of all of these conventions mentioned and use them in a a way which will make the genre clear and use them in a way that will communicate well with the audience as well as persuade them to watch the film. |

I have researched different production and distribution companies that have distributed films of the same genre as my own film. Some of the main distribution companies in the UK that could be interested in distributing my film include:
Buena Vista International (UK) Ltd Entertainment Lionsgate UK Pathe Distribution Buena Vista- Buena Vista are a part of disney and produce and distribute films for the mass audiences, however, they also cater for low-budget films. They have produced well known films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and have also had great box office achievements with films such as Calendar Girls which grossed an approximate of $96 million. However, having done some research into the types of films they distribute, they don't relate with my own. Pathé- Unlike some of these other production and distribution companies, Pathé produce more independent and low-budget films with hard-hitting themes. Their films tend to be based on real events, therefore making the overall impact of the film more effective. Their films are more targeted to niche audiences as their content is more gritty and their films are more art house rather than box-office hits. |
