SynposisNarrative |
Ava is a young teen who has a troubled past consisting of bullying at school, the consequences for this insecure girl became much more dramatic then some would expect, she turned to the media for help and guidance. Instead of having positive impacts, she became overly obsessed with the media and it's portrayals of beauty and the perfect figure as well as suitable fashion. This is when she started taking drastic measures in order to achieve this image of "beauty"; consequently suffering from eating disorders as well as anxiety. This film explores Ava's past through fast paced snapshots, it's impacts and some of her recovery process.
This narrative and themes have taken inspiration from numerous films and practitioners. Films that this plot has been inspired by are films which focus on the influences of the media; Nerve (2016) and Cyberbully (2015). Practitioners include Alfred Hitchcock; the way in which he has created dark tones within his film is an inspiration as this is the underlying tone I would like to achieve in my own trailer in order to establish the psychological impacts and aspects that occur in the film. My narrative aims to follow Todorov's narrative theory of including the equilibrium, then the disequilibrium, finally ending with the new equilibrium. This narrative structure is used in the majority of drams, however, they include more ups and downs which is also the am in my own film. |

Character ProfileName: Ava
Ava is the protagonist of the plot, the story we follow is hers. Age: 13 years old Gender: Female Strengths: Weaknesses: her insecurities Critical flaw: Ava's critical flaw, which is what the plot of the film follows is her fall into her obsession of the media and its impacts on her Back story: Ava isn't a character that would be classed as truly beautiful - due to this as well as her obviously shy personality, she is severely bullied at school. Despite all her on going issues at school, she has a relatively good home life, however, she isn't close to her parents so doesn't feel as if she can talk to them, especially with everything she endure at school. Behaviour: She is a shy girl so more often she keeps to herself, she does however have a few good, close friends at school. Motivations: She is motivated by the media and it's perception of beauty. What she really wants: To be accepted for who she is. Development through the plot: Ava goes from being a really insecure girl who hey bullied at school, from there she is drawn to the media as she sees it as the light of improvement to better herself, however, it's impacts are far worse then what was ever imagined. Finally , we witness her recovery process of her insecurities as well as her improvement on her health and well being. In relation to Propp's theory, Ava would be considered as the hero of the film. "Heroes" are those that conquer the "villains" of the novel, however, the villain is also found within Ava; it's her mental state. She is seen as the hero as she is the one who beats and overcomes the "villain". |

Age: 15 Gender: Female Type of character: bully Overview: Similar to Ethan, Becky, certainly in the trailer isn't seen but her taunting voice is heard, allowing the audience to come to the conclusion that like Ethan, she is also one of Ava's past bullys - however, this is only enigmatic - Ava's past of being bullied is not directly expressed, the voices of these two characetrs are the only hints, their actions and identities aren't yet revealed. |
Drama is a genre that portrays real life situations, therefore it's conventions are seen to be realistic in order for the audience to relate to the occurrences in the film, these include recognisable settings, props that are used in every day life, realistic social interacts ext. They reveal the journey of a character, this can be any type of journey whether it's physical ("Southpaw") such as, spiritual ("Wild"), or emotional ("Now is Good"), the types of journeys intertwine as well as showing character development. Settings: In order to create a sense of realism to a drama, they are generally set in recognisable settings to the audience. These types of setting will vary on the sub-genre of the film as well as the film's target audience. For example, the typical settings of a teen drama would include:
|
Themes: The theme of the film is a very important aspect of the film as it's what drives the plot forward. Therefore it is imperative that I focus on a central theme in my trailer in order for the audience to establish what the plot will be based around. Some of the most common themes explored in dramas include:
|
High angle & low angle
High angle shots, along with low angle shots are invariably used in the drama genre in order to symbolise a character of authority (low angle) or a more vulnerable/ weak character (high angle). The effects of these camera angles in dramas, not only implies where the character's stand in terms of their social hierarchy but also what position they are in psychologically/mentally. The angles can be interpreted to mirror how they see themselves compared to who they are with. With this in mind, I will use these camera angles to portray how Ava feels in terms of the other characters surrounding her. |
Shot listThis is the first draft of my shot list, the shots aren't presented in a chronological order to how they will be portrayed in the trailer. My aim is to firstly film this varying shots and then experiment with the order each shot will appear in the final product.

Animated StoryboardExtra elements/conventions not fully explored in the animated storyboard -
Lighting: The lighting throughout the storyboard will predominantly on the darker side. It won't darkly lit as horror films are, the effect of the dull lighting is to portray a somber mood. In certain shots such as landscape shots, the lighting will be slightly lighter as the views and the tranquil setting provides a sense of peace and hope, this effect will also come across through the lighting in the frame. As well as the use of lighting to drop the atmosphere (to mirror the character's mood), I will use colour correction in the post-production stage in order to create a more washed out colour palette. Soundtrack: The soundtrack I used in the background of this trailer is a track downloaded from a royalty free music website: http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/cinematic This is the type of dramatic music I would like to incorporate in the real trailer, this may not be the specific one I use however, I will something just as cinematic, evoking and dramatic to create an appropriate atmosphere to compliment the visual aesthetics. Voice over: The plan is to have a voice-over in the trailer, either throughout the trailer, or just at certain moments. The voice will be the one of the film's protagonist and in the form of a diary entry, therefore it will be fairly colloquial, in the girl's language - hardly formal. The purpose of the voice over in this context is to provide some background information about the film, however, not so much which will make the trailer more enigmatic. |

This rough script provides us as well as the actors with the type of dialogue that will feature in the trailer.
The dialogue within the trailer is important as it gives an insight to the types of characters in the film as well as provide clues and indications of the plot - contributing to the "enigma code). Meanwhile, the dialogue in my trailer will also be at a minimum which will also help to enhance the "enigma code" as it means that the audience will be left with more questions as to what is happening. In addition, it is also more effective for the genre of my film. During production and post production, it is likely that some of the dialogue will change to suit the scenes better as well as making it sound more natural. |
